Around Iceland, ships call at the capital and a string of fjord towns where volcanic landscapes, waterfalls and whale feeding grounds are a short ride away. Farther out, the Faroe Islands and Greenland add sheer bird cliffs, turf-roofed villages and iceberg-strewn fjords that feel very remote.

Is it worth leaving Reykjavik on a port day?
Usually, yes. The city is pleasant, but the reason most people come to Iceland lies outside it: the waterfalls and geysers of the Golden Circle, lava fields, lagoons and glaciers. Smaller ports such as Akureyri and Ísafjörður put you even closer to the scenery.
Are there many tours in the Faroes and Greenland?
Fewer than in Iceland or Norway, and they are often small-group or private. Book ahead when your ship calls at Tórshavn or Nuuk, because local capacity is limited on days when a ship is in port.
