Ships work their way up Norway’s west coast through deep, steep-sided fjords, then cross the Arctic Circle to Tromsø, Lofoten and the far north, and on some itineraries to the Svalbard archipelago. The fjord villages are small, so the adventure usually starts within sight of the pier, on the water or on a trail.

Which Norwegian ports are best for hiking?
Stavanger is the base for the Pulpit Rock hike above the Lysefjord, Geiranger and Flåm have trails starting close to the landing, and Olden gives access to glacier arms of Jostedalsbreen. Tromsø and Lofoten offer mountain walks with sea views.
Can I leave town on my own in Longyearbyen?
Not safely. Polar bears range across Svalbard, and people leaving the settlement are expected to travel with an armed, trained guide. Shore excursions take care of this, so book a guided outing for anything beyond the town itself.
