Find your port »Plan Your Day Ashore
Northern cruises reward the passenger who gets off the ship ready to move. In these ports the best of the day is usually outdoors: a guided walk on a glacier arm, a paddle under waterfalls in a narrow fjord, a fast boat ride out to sea cliffs and seabird colonies, or a hike to a viewpoint high above the anchored ship. This site is laid out port by port so you can see where you dock and which kinds of outings fit the hours ashore.
Each port page shows live shore excursions with an emphasis on the active ones, from kayaking and RIB safaris to whale watching, husky visits and mountain hikes. Check the fitness level, the duration and the meeting point before you book, and allow a margin for weather and tender boats.

How fit do I need to be for an adventure excursion?
It varies a lot. Fjord kayaking for beginners and most RIB rides need no special fitness, while glacier walks, Pulpit Rock and other summit hikes involve steep, uneven ground for several hours. Each listing describes its activity level, so read it closely and choose honestly.
What happens if the weather cancels my tour?
Wind, fog and sea state can stop boat trips, kayaking and glacier outings at short notice in these waters. Operators generally cancel when conditions are unsafe, and the listing explains its refund or rebooking terms. Keep a backup plan in town for the same port day.
What should I wear ashore?
Dress in layers with a waterproof shell, a warm hat and gloves, even in summer. Sturdy, broken-in footwear matters on trails and wet rock. For kayak and RIB trips, operators usually supply flotation suits or dry gear, so wear warm clothing underneath.
Will I see the midnight sun or the northern lights?
That depends on when you sail. Summer cruises bring very long days or full daylight around the clock in the far north, which suits hiking and boat trips. The northern lights need dark skies, so they are a possibility only on sailings in the darker months.
